Proper Way to Jump Start a Car

First and foremost, make sure you have a set of jumper cables in your car at all times. That way, you'll be prepared to jump start your car battery if you're stranded in the Lancaster area. When it is time to jump start a car battery, you will also need the help of another vehicle. From there, follow these steps on the proper way to jump start a car.

  1. Have the functioning vehicle face yours, hood to hood. Ensure that both vehicles are turned off, and both have parking brakes engaged.
  2. Pop the hood of each vehicle, and locate the battery, removing plastic hoods to expose battery terminals as necessary. Clean them to ensure they're free of corrosion.
  3. Take your jumper cables, and connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of your battery.
  4. Hook the second red clamp to the positive terminal on the helping car's battery, followed by the black clamp to this battery's negative terminal.
  5. The second black clamp should connect to an unpainted metal surface on your car's frame.
  6. With everything securely fastened, have the other driver start their car. Then, you can start your car.
  7. Once your car is running, remove the jumper cables in reverse order, and have the other driver turn off their vehicle.
  8. Keep your engine running for at least 10 minutes. This will ensure that your car doesn't die again right away.
